Fried Plantains

I’m from Nigeria and there’s no way I’m going to create a food blog without showcasing some Nigerian dishes. I was craving it today and thought, why not put it on my blog. Fried plantains aren’t just enjoyed in Nigeria but in other parts of the world. It’s delicious when done right and it’s meant to be simple not complicated. So go ahead and enjoy the simplicity of this dish.

Ingredients

  • 3-4 ripe plantains
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 1/2 – 2 cups oil (Depending on how big your pan is. Get it close to about half way up the pan)

Instructions

Peel open the plantains and lay them on a cutting board. Slice them diagonally making sure that there are similar in thickness. Place the sliced pieces into a bowl. Season the sliced plantains with salt.

Pour your oil into your pan and turn the heat between low-medium. Wait until the oil gets hot enough. Carefully put your slices of plantain into the oil making sure there’s some space between each plantain slice. Keep a close eye on them because you want to make sure they turn a nice golden brown color on each side before removing them from the pan. Enjoy!

*To see if the oil is hot enough, place one plantain slice into the oil and if there isn’t any bubbles reacting with the slice then you know it’s not hot enough.

*You can marinate and season some onions and add it to the finished plantains but that’s not needed. I have it here purely for aesthetics.
