Michigan Pasty

The Michigan Pasty is an iconic Michigan dish that originated from Cornwall, England. This pastry is really just a meat pie that coal miners used to heat up, wrap into a foil, and take to the coal mines. It typically includes rutabagas, sliced flank steak, onions, carrots, potatoes, and turnips.

I’ve lived in Michigan for quite some time now and never heard of the Michigan Pasty until a friend of mine once told me about it and was surprised that I’ve never tried it before. After doing some research on the Michigan Pasty, I decided not only to make it but to put my own little twist on it.

Ingredients

Dough:
  • Pre-made Pillsbury pie crust rolls (I would start with 5 to 6 of them )
Filling:
  • cooked and seasoned ground turkey
  • 1 cup of diced rutabaga
  • 1 cup of diced carrots
  • 1 yellow onion
  • 1 cup of diced Murasaki Sweet potatoes (Japanese white sweet potatoes)
  • 1 to 2 tablespoon of adobo seasoning
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons of chili powder (if you’re into spice)
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons of paprika
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons of chipotle powder
Dipping Sauce:
  • 1 tablespoon of vegan mayo (or just regular mayo will work)
  • 1 teaspoon of sriracha sauce
  • 1 teaspoon of honey
  • mix well

.

Instructions:

After making the dipping sauce, assemble the rutabagas, sweet potatoes, onions, and carrots in a bowl and season to your liking. Put the cooked and seasoned ground turkey in a separate bowl. Roll out the Pillsbury dough on a cutting board. Make sure there’s no tear. You might need to put some flour on the dough and kneed it until it’s the right consistency. Make sure the dough is laid out very flat on the cutting board and Scoop equal amounts of the vegetable mixture and the seasoned ground turkey into a 1/2 measuring cup, but you can do less if you want. Pour the scoop in the middle of the dough and fold the dough shut. Crimp the ends with a fork. Use a basting brush to paint the exterior with an egg wash. Poke three separate holes on the top to let some air out when it’s baking.

Preheat oven for 350 degrees Fahrenheit and set the pastries on a baking sheet. Bake for about an hour or till golden brown.
